E.
FISHER’S MAZES BUILT WORLDWIDE

AN EXPENSIVE MISTAKE

A MAZE* DESIGNER

4.1.
During his lifetime, Adrian Fisher has designed over 700 mazes located in 42 different countries. He built his first one in his father’s garden in Dorset when he was very young. Fisher knows better than anyone how to get people lost. He has designed mazes for theme parks, zoos, wildlife parks, museums, shopping malls and schools. Fisher has broken the world record for creating the world’s biggest maze which is located in China.
4.2.
Fisher has visited all the mazes he has designed. When Princess Alexandra, a member of the royal family, opened his maze at Leeds Castle, Fisher was given the task of accompanying the royal visitor through it. However, he didn’t realize that the gardeners had changed the design in one place and he found he had no idea how to get out of the maze. He felt really embarrassed!
4.3.
You might think that Fisher wants people to feel lost in his mazes. Actually, that’s not true. He believes they have most fun when they explore new paths. So what makes a great maze? Firstly, a maze must be entertaining. Secondly, like an enjoyable movie, it can’t be too long. Thirdly, you should be able to find the exit just before you get annoyed or bored. A maze must be an experience which you can share with friends, family and even complete strangers.
4.4.
One of his mazes allowed Fisher to earn extra money. In 2016, the Bank of England used the picture of the maze at Blenheim Palace on the back of its new £5 note. “The bank didn’t realize I had the copyright for the maze design,” Fisher explains. “And they didn’t ask me if they could use it. That’s why the bank had to accept my price. I couldn’t possibly tell you how much it was, but it was less than the cost of printing a whole set of new banknotes.”

Third Edition
Anna Sewell
Format: Paperback
Black Beauty is a story told from the point of view of a horse. When Black Beauty is trained to carry a rider on his back, and to pull a carriage behind him, he finds it hard at first. But he is lucky – his first owner is a kind person, who loves horses and takes good care of them. However, Black Beauty soon finds out that not all people are nice. When the horse is sold, the new owner feels no pity for him and makes him work long hours. Black Beauty is then sold several more times and his life becomes worse and worse. Some readers may find Black Beauty slightly old-fashioned. However, it reminds us that horses have feelings and can’t be used like machines, which, I believe, is something we still need to hear today.

HORSE RIDING
Around 5 million people watch various horse races annually in the UK. Only football matches gain a larger audience! But British people don’t just watch sports involving horses. In 2015, surveys showed that 2.7 million people in the UK rode a horse at least once a year. Today, this number is over 3 million. By contrast, the number of horses owned by individuals is lower now than it used to be ten years ago.

“Nancy, if you haven’t planned anything special for the day, I wonder if you would care to do something for me?” asked Carson Drew one morning at the breakfast table.
“Why, of course, Dad,” Nancy agreed. “What is it?”
“I have a number of legal documents which must be handed over to Judge Hartgrave at Masonville some time before noon. I would take them myself, but I have several important appointments this morning.”
“I’ll be glad to do it for you,” Nancy replied. “I can drive to Masonville. It is not more than fifteen miles away.”
“Fine. That means a lot to me. Are you sure you don’t mind?”
“It’s such a wonderful day, I’ll enjoy the trip.”
Mr. Drew came up to the window and looked out.
“It is a bright day, but I can’t say I like those clouds in the west, I’m afraid it may rain. I know how quickly our storms come up.”
“I’ll start immediately then. Where are the documents?”
“At the office. We can drive there together.” Nancy quickly ran off to get her bag. Before Mr. Drew had got his gloves and hat from the hall, she had backed the car from the garage and was waiting for him in front of the house.
“I haven’t heard you mention the Crawley case lately,” Mr. Drew commented as they drove along.
Nancy’s face changed, showing signs of worry.
“I must admit I have made no progress. I guess I’m not talented enough to become a detective.”
“Don’t give up, Nancy. The Crawley case would make a professional feel lost.”
“I haven’t given it up yet, father. I still hope I’ll find some answers one of these days.”
When they reached the law office, Nancy stopped the car and her father got out.
He disappeared inside the building and, returning a few minutes later, placed a fat envelope in Nancy’s hand.
“Give this to Judge Hartgrave. You know where to find him?” “Yes, I’ll have no trouble in finding his office.”
Nancy decided to take the shortest route to Masonville. As she was driving, her eyes travelled to the fields on either side of the road. Like a true daughter of the Mid West, Nancy Drew was proud of how wonderful her state was. She looked at the rolling hills and the wide prairie land, as well as the fields of green corn waving in the wind. Nothing could be more beautiful.
More than once Nancy looked up at the sky. The sun was shining very brightly on the road, but a large black cloud was coming from the west. It did not appear to be approaching very fast, and Nancy told herself that there was no need to worry about the storm.
“It won’t rain for an hour or two, and by that time I’ll be home,” she thought.

A “VILLAGE” OF TINY HOUSES

Moving from an apartment in a big city to a house in the country is always a big decision. The Brinks family bought 21 acres of land in Kentucky and started discussing what type of house would be best for them. Initially, Mr. Brinks wanted to build one big house for the whole family. She was also sure that the construction of several small houses would take less time than building one big house. That argument was very important to the Brinks family because they wanted to live ecologically and save energy.
Having completed their project, the Brinks are very satisfied with the result. The whole place looks like a little village with shared spaces such as a swimming pool and an outside fireplace. How does the unusual arrangement work? The parents’ house is larger and more expensive than the rest of the buildings. But it is still very small. The parents’ bed is above the kitchen and they have to climb a ladder to get into it. The children, Lennox and Brodey, have their own houses, each consisting of just one room. They were also decorated according to the children’s personal tastes. Lennox and Brodey like their little homes a lot, and they don’t mind having to go outside and walk to a separate bathroom building.
