AN UNUSUAL VISITOR

In the town of Loose, England, Maureen Roberts was having lunch with her daughter at home. She got a phone call from her neighbour, who said that a giant bird was walking near Maureen’s house. Maureen thought that her neighbour was joking. But as soon as she had sat down again, she heard the doorbell. Maureen had a camera at the front door which was connected to her smartphone. When she got up and looked at her phone, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Surprised, Maureen went to the door and opened it carefully. There really was an emu standing in front of her. She closed the door immediately and called the police. They sent a patrol car to Maureen’s house. They made sure the emu was safe and started looking for the owners. The bird’s name was Rodney and the family kept him as a pet. As soon as they found out where Rodney was, they came to pick him up and take him back home.

A CAR WITH NO DRIVER

A police officer in California stopped a car which was moving too slowly and causing a traffic jam. He was very surprised when he saw there was no driver inside. It turned out that the local car factory was testing its invention: a self-driving car.
It was going at 40 kilometres per hour in a place where most cars go at 60 kilometres per hour, so the officer contacted the engineers to them that their vehicle was moving too slowly. The engineers who programmed the car wrote about the incident in a blog post and joked: “Moving too slowly? Human drivers almost get stopped for that.”

SOME LITTLE-KNOWN FACTS ABOUT ICE SKATING
Did you know that skating is a very old way of quickly getting a place to place. A new study suggests that skates as a means of transport in northern Europe as early as 5,000 years ago. At that time, people in Finland came up with the idea of tying animal bones to their feet. As a result, they could move across frozen lakes instead of around them. On these skates it was possible to travel up to 20 kilometres a day at speeds of 4 or 5 kilometres an hour.
